Civil unions between gays and lesbians have been legalized in the northern border states of Coahila and Mexico City. The states of Veracruz and Michoacan are on the verge of passing the same measures, just like Jalisco, Colima, Puebla and Guerrero.

Still, homosexuals remain in the closet. Many gay men still maintain a macho facade and lesbian's are mostly underground, even though Mexicans are very liberal in their attitude towards homosexuality.

Mexicans prefer to be more discrete then Americans, however gay travelers are greeted warmly in most of the country. As a matter of fact, in 2007 Planetout named Mexico travel destination of the year.

Let's take a look at the Mexico's top gay destinations:

Cancun. Is the newest hot spot for gay visitors. Traditionally it was Acapulco, or Puerto Vallarta. This even though it has an image that it is a place for straight people on Spring Beak. Cancun is located in the state of Quintana Roo in the Yucatan Peninsulameaning it has a subtropical climate. The average temperatures range 81 to 95 degrees F.

The best places for gays to go to for a bit of night life is downtown which is about fifteen minutes from the Hotel Zone. There is the Karamba, this place is popular for a mix, young international crowd for the last thirty years. There's also the Picante, the crowd that this place is popular for is, straights, gays, drag queens, transvestites.

Unofficially the gay beach is the Playa Delfines. It has the longest and widest beach. The Villas Tacul is geared towards homosexuals.There appears to be about one hundred hotels to choose from that are gay-friendly.

Latin Hot Party is the very first great event dedicated to all GLBT in the world. Unlike many others meetings, this event has the enormous advantage of being perfectly organized and structured in order to ensure a safe and fun time! The best gay night clubs and the most beautiful gay beaches in Cancun.

Mexico City. This city has a large population of gays and lesbians. Recently Mexico City made history by making same sex civil unions legal. For entertainment there are gay plays, and about two dozen gay clubs located mostly in the Zona Rosa. And then there is the Annual Gay Pride Parade.

Guadalajara. This is Mexico's second largest city in terms of gays and lesbians. This city is very open about it's large and openly gay citizens, especially in Plaza Tapatia. This city features a gay radio show along with a gay cultural center. Guadalajara has really large population of lesbians.

There is a long list of gay bars and clubs. But here is just a couple. The Angel's bar that plays electronica. Monica's Disco plays Latin rhythm disco. To locate other clubs and bars for a bit of nightlife look for La Guia Rosa or Zona Gay.
